The Sunday Paper #625

September 27, 2026

I make paper for others occasionally, and this unique wild abaca took over my studio this week. I have to lay each sheet out flat to air dry, so I made two batches of 22 sheets. Then, I misted each sheet to relax them a bit, and put them in my restraint dryer (where they currently are). They’ll end up with a unique texture and much flatter than what you see here. The wet sheets are 18″ x 23″ and the dry sheets end up as 14″ x 17″ – that’s high shrinkage.

Also in the studio, I recorded the video for the next Paper Year project, a Woven Notebook. This project features a machine-made momigami from Japan and a sheet of wall paper. Not only will we be exploring paper weaving, but this notebook has a woven hinge at the foredge and a double-pamphlet stitched text block. Find out more about The Paper Year at my free Zoom this coming Thursday. More on that below.

Woven paper strips seem to be trending. Two of my favorite paper artists are exploring paper vessels, created with woven strips. Below left: Matt Shlian, Woven Vessel 5 in Pashmina Grey and Black 28” x 16” x 16”; and below right: Goran Konjevod, Möbius Band, woven from two sets of laser-cut strips of thick unryu from Awagami Factory, 6” tall.

If you are in or around Brooklyn, don’t miss Laura Anderson Barbata’s Reposo y Recuerdo Día De Muertos Ofrenda in the Historic Chapel at the The Green-Wood Cemetery, October 9 – November 16, 2026. Colorful papel picado (cut-paper banners) adorn the Chapel alongside cascading paper marigold garlands. In keeping with the intention of Día de Muertos, death is honored not as an end, but as a connection to our past. Visitors are encouraged to participate by adding personal tributes—photos, notes, flowers, or other small mementos—to the altar. You can also contribute by decorating a calavera (skull) or sharing your memories on the flowing red ribbon.

This is a busy week full of paper and light!

I’m hosting a free hands-on paper workshop on Thursday, October 1st at 12 noon Mountain Time. We’ll be making these uniquely shaped Floral Lanterns from a single sheet of patterned paper — just a square, four triangles, and a few tabs, folded into a sturdy little pyramid. Then we’ll curl the papery tips into soft spirals that spray open at the top, like a flower caught mid-bloom. Slip in a tea light to make the petals glow.

I also have a presentation at the Making Zen Retreat on October 1st, where you will learn to make two lanterns: a Cube Light (pictured in the middle below) and a Tea Light Topper. This workshop is pre-recorded, and you’ll have 24 hours to watch my video presentation for free. There’s also a VIP option, which gives you lifetime access to my workshop and 30+ other textile-related workshops (this is a last day to grab that VIP offer for $97; it goes up to $147 tomorrow). Get all the details here!

In honor of my new book, Weaving With Paper, I’m featuring highlights from the book by professional artists as well as participants in my online class, Weave Through Winter, which the book is based on. There are 30 projects with prompts and each project features a weaving technique. Prompt #20 is Winding: ““What comes to your mind? Spools of thread? An old clock or watch? A cyclone? A yo-yo? A rope? Perhaps a maze?” Below you see responses to the prompt that are featured in my book by Therese Lennert and Lisa Merkin.

Paper of The Week: William Morris Origami Paper

This is a pack of 64 sheets of high quality origami paper in 8 unique designs (the paper is double-sided, with a simple one color floral print on the back). The pack, which comes in a fun square envelope, includes instructions for folding models. The paper is 6″ x 6″.

I purchased this paper from Pomegranate. They carry a few other unique origami packs.
