The Sunday Paper #624

September 20, 2026

I had a great group in the studio this week for my last workshop of the year, a Papermaking Master Class. Ava, Deanna, Rebecca and Thalia traveled here to participate in every stage of the papermaking process, as we discussed variations on professional and DIY studio set up, preparing pulp, mixing additives, sheet forming, pressing and drying. We also explored a selection of creative techniques and spent a day at Susan Mackin Dolan’s – she employs hand papermaking techniques that require basic equipment and is able to create professional papers without a beater, press or drying system. Next year’s session will take place during the weeks of June 7-11 and September 13-17. Registration will open soon.

There’s so much going on in my little paper world, and I’m pretty sure the marketing Gods would fire me for promoting too many things at once, but here goes:

  1. I’m hosting a free hands-on paper workshop on Thursday, October 1st at 12 noon Mountain Time. We’ll be making these uniquely shaped Floral Lanterns from a single sheet of patterned paper — just a square, four triangles, and a few tabs, folded into a sturdy little pyramid. Then we’ll curl the papery tips into soft spirals that spray open at the top, like a flower caught mid-bloom. Slip in a tea light to make the petals glow.
  2. I also have a presentation at the Making Zen Retreat on October 1st, where I’ll show you how to make two lanterns: a Tea Light Topper (pictured in the middle below) and a Cube Light. This workshop is pre-recorded, and you’ll have 24 hours to watch my video presentation for free. There’s also a VIP option for a fee, which gives you lifetime access to my workshop and 30+ other textile-related workshops. Get all the details here!
  3. The Floral Lantern workshop mentioned in #1 is also a preview of my membership program, The Paper Year, which will be open to new members October 1-10. We’ll be creating Woven Notebooks, Star Topped Boxes, Collapsible/Connectable Luminaria and A Quick Stack of Notebooks over the last months of 2026. Learn more about The Paper Year.

Feel free to forward this blog post to your paper-loving friends and invite them to the workshops!

Paper on Skin is coming to Tasmania soon, totally worth a trip to down under! Tickets for this wearable art event are on sale now for the Gala Event and Award Evening (Oct 3); and Up-Close Showcase at Basalt (Oct 4). They recently photographed and filmed Paper on Skin pieces in the beautiful wild places of Lutruwita/Tasmania. Take a look.

This is a great written and video profile about the artist Miki’ala Souza, who creates layered monotype prints of windswept seascapes that evoke currents, waterways and migration.

I love the arc of this story. “This project represents the fulfillment of a dream I had nurtured for many years. Passionate about watchmaking since I was a child, I had long imagined bringing paper into this universe. When Vacheron Constantin contacted me, it felt like a sign of destiny.” – Marianne Guély. Check out the video Guély’s new watch face design (embossed paper); take a look at her fantastical new website; and listen to our conversation on Paper Talk.

Here’s a round up of three South Korean artist solo shows to catch in Seoul before the end of 2026. Do Ho Suh works in Korean hanji and thread.

In honor of my new book, Weaving With Paper, I’m featuring highlights from the book by professional artists as well as participants in my online class, Weave Through Winter, which the book is based on. There are 30 projects with prompts and each project features a weaving technique. Prompt #19 is Symbol, and it features a way of revealing a shape with the weaving structure.
